Remember the fires in the summer of 2002 that I mentioned on the previous page? Well, here were some burned branches on the side of the road about a half hour away. Had the fire jumped that road, the entire community of Pinetop, including the cabin, probably would have been lost.


This shot gives you a little sense of the destruction left by the fire. If you click on that image, it'll take you to a composite panoramic shot of that mountain - or what's left of it.


Moving south an hour or so, we reach the Salt River Canyon. When it's snowy, this is an extrememly treacherous area to drive, and many people are killed on that 10 mile stretch of curvy highway. Fortunately, the weather was nice while we were there.
